The Innova Energy Journey

Innovating into the dynamic solar industry, the Innova Energy set out on a mission spurred by South Africa’s escalating Eskom crisis. The initial steps revealed a stark contrast between the pressing need for renewable energy and what was being presented to consumers. Countless meetings ensued with consultants, engineers, and salespeople, each offering conflicting perspectives. Relationships were forged and fractured amidst divergent viewpoints and profit-driven motives.

Hours were spent in boardrooms sifting through potential partners, separating opportunists from those who shared Innova’s vision.

In November 2022

Innova witnessed a groundbreaking solar installation at Kagga Kamma in the Western Cape’s Cederberg district. This installation, powering one of the VRS-managed resorts, stood as a beacon of innovation. Kagga Kamma, which had previously relied on diesel generators and lead-acid Battery Energy Storage Systems, was now a testament to sustainable energy transformation.

The experience at Kagga Kamma was transformative. Collaborating with Consulting Engineers, EPC, and Electrical Contractors, Innova saw the system in action, fostering collaboration, inquiry, and relationships. Innova conducted Solar studies across hospitality resorts and sites nationwide.

These studies would provide essential insights on solar installations, ideal locations, feasibility, load-shedding mitigation, electrical infrastructure analysis, irradiation studies, and cost estimates. Seeking funding for solar projects became a top priority. While most financial institutions hesitated due to the unique Shareblock model of the hospitality industry, Innova could only secure a Medium Term Loan with a 35% deposit requirement and Suretyship. Other financing avenue emerged: the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). While offering stability and budgeting advantages, it posed challenges in terms of asset ownership and control. Innova continued the quest for a financier capable of navigating these complexities.

Innova, in collaboration with its strategic partners and financiers, is poised to deliver a comprehensive energy solution to industries across the board. Our flagship project, scheduled to commence in early 2024 at Ngwenya Lodge in Mpumalanga, represents a pioneering endeavor in renewable energy. This project integrates a substantial solar installation (1500 kWp) with cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) boasting 1500 kVA capacity and 3200 kWh storage capabilities. It exemplifies our commitment to sustainable and forward-thinking energy solutions.
